Fines and Fees
Your local board of trustees decides the amount your local library charges for card fees or for late materials. Fines have traditionally been put in place to encourage patrons to return their items in a timely manner and ensure everyone has fair access to library materials. An outstanding accumulation of fines or fees may result in a block on a patron account which prevents them from making full use of library services.
In the interests of equitable access, many libraries in Alberta and across North America have made the move to eliminate fines and fees entirely to reduce economic barriers and punitive consequences in the library environment; this is also a decision that can be made by your local board.
Any request to change or remove fines and fees in Polaris should be directed to your Polaris system administrator at your local system headquarters. These changes cannot be made locally.
Fees for Lost or Damaged Items
If damage to an item is caused by a patron, or if a patron has lost an item, the patron is responsible for paying for the item. If the library that checked the item out to a patron is unable to collect money from the patron, that library is responsible for compensating the owning library for the lost or damaged item upon receipt of an invoice from the owning library.
These fees for lost or damaged materials will vary depending on the item cost as stated in the Polaris item record. If the item record does not include a price, then the system default fee will be levied.
